About Jan

Do you just absolutely hate to clean your microwave? Are you actually afraid to look at the inside of your microwave, especially the top? Then this is the tip you've been waiting for:

USE STEAM!

Using a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup, or any other 2-cup microwave safe bowl or container, fill the cup (bowl or container) halfway with tap water.

Set the microwave cook cycle for several minutes (however long it takes to boil 1 cup of water in your microwave).

When the cook cycle is finished (that is, when the water has completely boiled and the microwave "dings"), DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Water that is boiled in a clean cup or dish can become "super-heated." Without any appearance of "boiling" (the water bubbling vigorously), water can literally "explode" out of the cup and cause serious burns on your hands, arms, and face. Be sure to allow sufficient time for the water to cool before you open the microwave door and remove the cup.

Set the timer on your microwave (or any other countertop timer you have) for a minimum of 5 minutes. This gives all the steamy moisture built up inside your microwave a chance to soften the hardened explosions of baked beans, chili, and last night's beef stew leftovers. This also allows the boiling water to cool.

After 5 minutes, open the microwave, and remove the cup of water. Be sure to handle the cup with potholders or an oven mitt. Set the cup on a trivet or potholder. Wipe the interior with paper toweling (I prefer to use Handi-Wipes so I can rinse out and reuse).

Leave the door of the microwave open until the inside is completely dry.

You now have a CLEAN microwave!
