Tip: Freezer Wrapping

Freezer Wrapping Your Bread or Other Baked Goods

When you are going to keep bread or anything other baked good in your freezer for more than one week, you need to protect it against freezer burn and dehydration by freezer wrapping it.

You will need:

Plastic wrap (I prefer Saran Premium Wrap)

Heavy duty aluminum foil (I prefer Reynolds)

Freezer paper (I prefer Reynolds)

Freezer tape (I use 3M Freezer Tape)

After baking, allow bread (other baked good) to cool.

Wrap bread in one layer of plastic wrap. Make sure the edges of the plastic wrap overlap sufficiently to maintain the seal.

Now wrap in aluminum foil, shiny side IN. Make sure you allow enough foil so that you can fold the edges together to secure the foil tightly around the bread.

Finish by wrapping in freezer paper, glossy side IN. Use the freezer paper as if it were gift wrap, folding over edges as you would if you were gift-wrapping a box. Secure the ends of the freezer paper with freezer tape.

You can write on the freezer paper in pencil or you can paste on a label. Click here for a Sample Label for a loaf of Sourdough Bread. (The label sample will open in a new window as a Word document. Use Avery 8460 address labels. Please note that this template will print a full page of 30 labels. If you need fewer labels, simply delete the excess labels before printing.)

Your freezer-wrapped item will last several months. To thaw, remove from freezer and allow to come to room temperature before unwrapping.
